Designed by Max Friz, the first complete motorcycle to be built by BMW, they had produced horizontally opposed motorcycle power units for sale to other manufacturers from 1920, was unveiled on the 28th September 1923. The new model, typed the R32 established certain principles that BMW would adhere to for the next 80 years. The horizontally opposed, side valve, 494cc engine was mounted transversely in the frame enabling a single plate clutch and shaft final drive, via a three speed gearbox, to be employed. The power unit was mounted in a twin loop rigid frame with twin cantilever springs providing the front suspension. Developing 8.5hp at 3,200 rpm the new model was capable of 90 - 100 km/h and quickly built a reputation for reliability and good performance with over 3000 machines being built during the models three year production life despite the models high price of 2,200 rm.
The example offered is a rare survivor of BMW's first motorcycle and is described as being in very good condition mechanically with very good cosmetics. It is accompanied by registration documents and copies of the original owners manual, workshop manual and parts catalogue.
