Lot details Registration No: NWJ445D Chassis No: CTC/73734-L Mot Expiry: Aug 2008
Launched in 1961, the Michelotti styled TR4 was the first TR-series sports car to incorporate wind-up windows and through-flow ventilation. With independent coil sprung front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and disc/drum brakes; its chassis layout was similar to that of its TR3A predecessor. However, the adoption of rack and pinion steering and a four-inch wider track gave the later model notably better handling. Powered by a 2138cc, four-cylinder, ohv engine developing some 104bhp and 128lbft of torque, the TR4 was reputedly capable of 110mph and 0-60mph in 10.5 seconds. Such performance was easily accessed thanks to the presence of synchromesh on each of the four speeds in its manual gearbox (another TR first). Updated in late 1964 as the TR4A, it gained a new grille, revised body-to-chassis mountings and most importantly of all independent rear suspension.
Finished in British Racing Green with red leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (engine, gearbox, paintwork, wheels / tyres), "very good" (chassis, bodywork) or "new" (electrical equipment, interior trim) condition. According to an accompanying British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, chassis CTC/73734-L was built on October 31st 1966. A North American export model that was supplied new via the Standard Triumph Motor Company Limited of Detroit, it is said to have undergone a "chassis up restoration" and conversion to right-hand drive since returning to the UK. As well as being extensively "shot blasted and zinc primed", the TR4A was reportedly treated to "new floors and sills" (though, its outer body panels are understood to be original). Further benefiting from "poly bushed suspension" and a "rear telescopic shock absorber conversion", the two-seater sports new red leather upholstery and a similarly recent green mohair hood. Riding on wire wheels, this appealing Triumph sportscar is offered for sale with MOT certificate and historic class (free) road tax both valid until August 2008.
