The now world famous Land Rover came to market because Rover were looking for an exports booster and their engineering chief Maurice Wilks wanted to produce a British-made 4wd replacement for the WW2 Jeep that he employed as a work horse around his estate in Wales. Landy production started in 1948, the first vehicles powered by the inlet-over-exhaust, 4-cylinder, petrol-fuelled 1595cc engine from the Rover 60.
The entrant of this Land Rover, an 88ins 2.2-litre 4-cylinder engined station wagon, was purchased new in 1978 from the Land Rover dealer in Haverfordwest by the Llewellyn family. It is claimed to have been unused since, having been dry-stored in the intervening years apparently, although regularly run and checked with chassis also oiled to ward off corrosion on a regular basis.
The vehicle is said still to be totally original and the just 733 miles displayed on the odometer when entered for this auction is believed by the vendor to be the genuine and extraordinarily low total mileage for this farmer's friend from new. Currently, chassis, station wagon bodywork, green paintwork, black interior, motor, electrical equipment and transmission are described as being in excellent condition.
The vendor tells us that the vehicle will have been freshly MOT tested before sale day and prospective owners are advised to check out the new certificate in the paperwork file, which may be inspected in the documents office at Buxton.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
