Lot details Registration No: USJ 646 Chassis No: H-BJ7-L/20894 Mot Expiry: May 2008
Introduced in February 1962, the 3000 MKII 2+2 'BJ7' model (nicknamed the MKIIa) pioneered such 'luxuries' on a Big Healey as wind-up windows, swivelling quarter-lights and a fixed convertible hood. Its independent wishbone front suspension gained stiffer coil springs and it benefited from a more direct steering box. The manual / overdrive transmission gained a new case, and the 2912cc straight-six engine switched to twin carburettors. With a reputed 132bhp and 170lbft of torque on tap, Girling front discs became standard equipment.
Finished in Ivory White with blue upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive transmission, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres (while, he rates the electrical equipment and interior trim as "fair"). According to an accompanying BMIHT certificate, 'USJ 646' was despatched to dealer A. Bruggemann & Co (Dusseldorf) on October 24th 1962. Thought to have migrated to Italy during the mid 1980s, it returned to the UK in 1998. As well as being converted from left- to right-hand drive, the Big Healey is understood to have benefited from some bodywork restoration and a re-trim before entering the current ownership in February 1999. Despite covering just 2,000 miles since then, the sportscar has received attention to its stainless exhaust, brakes, tyres, overdrive, water pump, windscreen, heater, engine mounts, sump and propshaft etc. Sporting a mixture of metric, imperial and Italian labelled instruments as well as a full- / half-tonneau and serviceable but not perfect hood, the MKIIa is offered for sale with Austin-Healey 3000 owner's / workshop manuals, sundry invoices and MOT certificate valid until May 2008.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
