Billed as a family friendly E-type, the Series I 2+2 Fixed Head Coupe (known variously as the XKE Family Coupe or XKE Sedan in America) was introduced in 1966. Equipped with a pair of small rear seats and a notably airy feel courtesy of its stretched wheelbase and raised roofline respectively, it benefited from the same fully independent suspension, rack and pinion steering and disc brakes as its two-seater brethren. Powered by a 4235cc dohc straight six engine developing a quoted 265bhp and 283lbft of torque, it was the first E-type model to list automatic transmission as an option. Only in production for two years, a mere 5,600 are thought to have been built.
In single ownership for thirty-seven years, this particular example is reported to have undergone an extensive restoration some 2,600 miles ago. Treated to an engine rebuild and transmission overhaul (complete with exchange four-speed manual gearbox from the Jaguar factory), it is also said to have received a thorough refurbishment of its brake and suspension assemblies (front and rear) together with new thermostats and an exchange cooling fan for its rejuvenated radiator. Fitted with a new petrol tank, heater box / core and doors (including hinges), it was cosmetically updated with a glassfibre Series III style bonnet and flared wheel arches. Finished in signal red, its appearance is enhanced by triple-plated chromework (the copper / nickel / chrome process being entrusted to Derby Platers) and a set of period Magna alloy wheels. Trimmed in black leather, its interior sports a sunroof and new front seats. Though, we are informed that it needs some minor finishing (parcel trays, arm rests and sun visors etc). Described by the vendor as being in good overall condition (albeit that the GRP bonnet and wheelarches now show "distortion and minor paint cracks"), it is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until April 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
