Introduced at the 1970 New York Motor Show, the De Tomaso Pantera was developed with financial assistance from silent partner Ford and marketed through the Blue Oval's Lincoln / Mercury dealer chain in America. Fine-tuned by Giampaolo Dallara, its steel monocoque chassis was equipped with all-round double wishbone independent suspension and disc brakes. Powered by a mid-mounted Ford V8 engine mated to a ZF 5-speed transaxle, the Pantera promised Maranello performance with Detroit reliability. Blessed with crisp, modern lines by Tom Tjaarda of Ghia, racing experience accumulated by the factory saw it adopt a series of 'aero packs' (its predilection for which was only rivalled by the Lamborghini Countach). Debuting in 1985, the Pantera GT5-S boasted a front spoiler, sideskirts, a towering tail wing and flared wheelarches. Wider tracked than its predecessors, it also benefited from a new fascia
Finished in black with cream leather upholstery, this particular right-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in very good overall condition. Reportedly "maintained regardless of cost", it is currently fitted with a very special, "all balanced Brookspeed Ford SVO 5,550cc V8". With a specification that includes: "Carillo rods, Cosworth pistons, lightened flywheel, Tilton three-plate clutch, race cams and a 4-barrell Holley", this fearsome powerplant apparently recorded some 500bhp when dyno tested in 2001. Reputed to have covered just 25,977km from new, this 'stealth bomber' supercar is offered for sale with a "large file of service history / ownership" (thirteen previous MOT certificates, assorted old tax discs etc) and MOT certificate valid until September 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
