Lot details Registration No: DTM441D Chassis No: CTC675460 Mot Expiry: T.B.A.
Launched in 1961, the Michelotti styled TR4 was the first TR-series sports car to incorporate wind-up windows and through-flow ventilation. With independent coil sprung front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and disc / drum brakes; its chassis layout was similar to that of its TR3A predecessor. However, the adoption of rack and pinion steering and a four-inch wider track gave the later model notably better handling. Powered by a 2138cc, four-cylinder OHV engine developing some 104bhp and 128lbft of torque, the TR4 was reputedly capable of 110mph and 0-60mph in 10.5 seconds. Such performance was easily accessed thanks to the presence of synchromesh on each of the four speeds in its manual gearbox (another TR first). Updated in late 1964 as the TR4A, it gained a new grille, revised body-to-chassis mountings and most importantly of all independent rear suspension.
Finished in red with black upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (interior trim, paintwork) or "very good" (engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, bodywork) condition. Reportedly "restored in the early 1980s before being taken off the road during 1991", 'DTM 441D' is further understood to have been "recommissioned last November". Said to "drive very well", the Triumph boasts a desirable 'Surrey Top' and wire wheels (though, it also retains "a hood and folding frame"). Judged by the seller to be "a good, sound car that is ready to use", this appealing TR4A is offered for sale with assorted paperwork.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
