MG-badged sports cars were available from 1924 until 1980, when production of the evergreen MG B was terminated and the doors of the famous Abingdon plant closed. Of all the cost-cutting measures taken by a desperate British Leyland, this caused the biggest outcry. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and, some years later, the company began exploring how best to rekindle the invaluable MG brand. An extended dip into the (now Rover) parts bin produced the limited edition MG B-based RV8 as a stopgap, while an all new model was brought to fruition. The newcomer - the MG F - was unveiled to considerable acclaim in the autumn of 1995.
Considering the general lack of available budget, the designers and engineers were remarkably creative. The F was penned as early as 1991 by Steve Harper of MGA Developments and then honed over the next few years by Rover's in-house design team. The result was a pretty, sharp-handling, mid-engined two-seater powered by a 1796cc version of the company's K-Series engine, mated to a close-ratio five-speed manual gearbox. The impressive ride was courtesy of a Hydragas suspension system similar to that of the Metro. The hood mechanism was a modified version of the Mazda MX5 unit built under licence, and a hard top was one of the optional extras. Performance was lively - for the standard (non VVC) version, think around 8.5 seconds for the 0-60mph sprint and a top speed of 120mph. Some 77,269 MG Fs had been built by the time the model was supplanted by the TF in 2002.
The right-hand drive F offered left the Longbridge plant in 1997 and sports British Racing Green coachwork teamed with a Cream leather interior. The vendor considers the indicated mileage of 64,200 to be correct and backed by the car's comprehensive history. He regards the general condition of the vehicle to be "very good" and is selling the MG complete with appropriate registration number `G55 MGF', new brakes, CD player and an MOT into April 2012. Fun to drive and broadly trouble free if well maintained, these chic-looking little MGs are currently remarkably good value and will surely only get dearer with time.
