Armstrong-Siddeley Motors Ltd was founded in 1919 as the result of a merger between existing car manufacturers Armstrong-Whitworth of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Siddeley-Deasy of Coventry. Based in the latter's home city, its products - readily identifiable on account of their raked V-prow radiators, multi-stud disc wheels and distinctive Sphinx mascots - soon garnered a reputation for quality workmanship, comfort and refinement. Introduced in 1927, the 20hp was the second largest model in the range. Available in both owner- and chauffer-driven guises (on 'Short' and 'Long' wheelbases respectively), its sturdy ladder frame chassis was equipped with supple leaf-springs and all round drum brakes. Powered by a smooth 2872cc six-cylinder unit that drew on the company's aero engine expertise, the 20hp could be had with an optional Wilson pre-selector gearbox from 1929 onwards. Always somewhat exclusive (total Armstrong-Siddeley car production rarely exceeded 1,000 units per annum), survivors are understandably scarce.
Supplied by the late Doug Connell, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in excellent overall condition. Finished in blue over black with blue vinyl upholstery, it is said to start first time. Properly Vintage in that it was built before December 31st 1930, this elegant saloon has the further benefit of pre-selector transmission.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
