It was in 1956 that William Lyons' sporting marque brought out a brand new generation of smaller sports saloons, not with separate chassis and bodywork, but employing unitary construction. The first model in the new range was powered by a 2.4-litre six-cylinder engine based on the legendary XK motor, which powered the already historic XK120 of 1948-1955 and the newly-launched XK140 replacement, though with shorter stroke.
First built in Coventry in 1957, this Mk1 saloon has been prepared for the 1994 ICS Historic Saloon Car Championship. Due to personal issues, however, the car only ever did four races followed by the occasional track day between 1994 and now, which may explain why, as the vendor claims, the right-hand drive four-door is still "fresh".
The power unit fitted is a full race 3.8-litre by leading specialists Forward Engineering, who have equipped it with dry sump lubrication, Carillo conrods, Cosworth pistons, racing camshafts and triple SU carburettors. Petrol and catch tanks are in aluminium. The four-speed manual gearbox has the benefit of an overdrive. A full race specification braking system comprises AP brakes and twin master cylinders. The suspension is full race, too, with rose joints and Watts linkage. A wider axle from a Mk2 has been fitted as has a limited slip differential. The alloy wheels are 8x15 Compomotives.
In the few races undertaken, the car, which is still painted in original racing livery having been sponsored by Cadbury's Boost, achieved two class wins. Whilst the owner believes that a brown logbook with 45 UPH registration is the original.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
