Joe Stevens and his four sons produced the first AJS motorcycle at the Stevens Screw Co. factory in 1909. By 1920 AJS had one of the first English machines to incorporate a 350cc OHV engine into it's specification and five years later a 500cc option was available. At this time the massive AJS range comprised a 750 v twin Brooklands bike, a four in line aircooled engine, sidevalve models of varying capacities, ohc singles for a TT attempt, and 1000cc v twin world record special, all available until 1931 when the old firm was taken over by the opposing Collier dynasty, owners of the Matchless brand. This association was to last some four decades.
In the traditional AJS black and gold livery this 1926 3.5 h.p. 500cc. 3 speed Model G8, a machine from the so called Golden Age of motorcycling, perhaps owes more to the preceding pioneer period in style and design rather than the vintage era shortly to follow. It is a superb example of the flat tank age with underslung fuel and lubricant reservoirs, evocative fishtail silencer, reverse levers and boot chewingly exposed kickstart mechanism. Period leather toolbags, bulb horn and rear carrier contribute to the attraction of SO 2710, an ideal Banbury machine.
Looking to be in excellent condition, the bike is reported by the owner to be all good, that it runs well and is ready for use. It has current Swansea V5, old buff log book and expired MOT certificates up to May 2011, and surely will repay the new owner with many hours of vintage style motorcycling pleasure.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
