Always living up to their famous racing heritage, Alfa Romeo have constantly produced road cars which have stood apart from the competition by being tremendous fun to drive with in many cases stunning Italian styling. Whilst the Giulia Berlina introduced in 1962 may not go down in history as one of the prettiest Alfas ever produced it certainly lived up to the marque's reputation as far as performance and handling were concerned with a fabulous twin cam 1570cc engine and five speed gearbox which together with a supple and precise chassis showed a clean pair of heels to many a car of much more sporting appearance throughout the 1960s/70s. The Sprint Coupe version launched in 1964 and designed by Bertone however certainly was one of the prettiest Alfas ever with its simple yet exquisitely detailed two door coupe styling. A true thoroughbred, the Sprint was not a cheap car in relation its engine size and yet its ability to outperform cars with engines up to 1000cc larger, all with more than a dash of that indefinable Italian flair, ensured that the Sprint found a ready market among enthusiasts who appreciated the refinement of the car's engineering. Ideally suited to saloon car racing the Giulia Sprint was developed in GTA form into a formidable race weapon and many will remember the lengthy battles in the early'70s fought between the Alfas and the Capri RS2600s on European race circuits.
The Giulia on offer here today is a right hand drive car which was first modified to racing specification in Denmark in 2001 having been imported from South Africa, which accounted for its rare rust-free condition. The car was then imported into the UK in 2002 where it was developed into an Appendix K car suitable for FIA long-distance events. An FIA legal 1600cc race tuned engine built by recognised expert Jim Evans was fitted which produces a dynoed 157bhp at the flywheel and is mated to a genuine GTA lightweight 5-speed close ratio gearbox. The race clutch is housed in a lightweight Furiani bellhousing and a 'gripper' limited-slip 5.30:1 competition differential fitted. The latest tubular manifold is fitted along with lightweight starter motor and new Dunlop front discs. The professionally set-up and corner weighted suspension has all round Koni racing shock absorbers whilst the interior houses a Safety Devices roll cage, fire extinguisher and FIA seat/harness. There is an FIA foam-filled fuel cell in the boot. All aspects of the cars condition are described by the vendor as 'excellent' or 'perfect', the car having been maintained by Alfa guru Bob Dove, and we are told that the car is fully race prepared and ready to run with UK FIA Historic Vehicle Identity form and HSCC papers.
