"Firmly established, regularly improved, and as yet scarcely challenged in its class, the Riley Nine has a very definite appeal to those who can appreciate performance, safety, comfort and an appearance out of the ruck" (Autocar magazine, 1931)
Intended as a more luxurious and spacious version of the Riley 9 Monaco, the Biarritz was introduced in 1928. Sharing the same basic design parameters as its humbler sibling, it was built around a low-slung ladder frame chassis equipped with all round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension and four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by Riley's jewel-like 1087cc 'twin-cam' four-cylinder engine allied to a four-speed manual gearbox, it upheld the marque's reputation for strong performance and fine handling.
According to its quoted chassis number, this particular example is apparently one of the 'Plus Series' cars (which began at '6011013') and as such benefits from a host of detail changes including a revised roofline and larger doors etc. Finished in black with green leather upholstery, it is described by the vendor as being in good condition with regard to its engine, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, paintwork, bodywork and wheels / tyres (though, he rates the four-speed manual gearbox as very good). Said to be a "very original car", it was reportedly with its last keeper for thirty years. Some £40 more expensive than the Monaco upon launch (£325 vs. £285), the Biarritz only lasted in production until 1932. A rare survivor, this handsome Riley is now ready for another period of long-term ownership.
