Steib Metallbau was a company based in Nuremberg, Germany that manufactured motorcycle sidecars. The firm was founded in 1914 by Josef Steib Senior and began making sidecars in 1928 following a commission from the motorcycle manufacturer Ardie. The company reached its peak in the 1950s when it produced over 50 models a day and claimed to manufacture 92% of all sidecars sold in Germany, becoming the standard model offered with BMW motorcycles. There are few better known manufacturers than the German firm whose much copied ‘Zeppelin’ style single-seater sports chairs enjoy a well-deserved reputation for sound engineering and exemplary build quality. Whist the company closed in 1957 they are probably still the most sought after sidecar to this day with firms offering a good spares and accessory back up.
The Steib S350 was intended for use with medium capacity machines. The body was constructed using steel panels trimmed with polished alloy strips to form the famous ‘Zeppelin’ shape and incorporated a usefully sized boot. The body was mounted on a chassis with a sprung wheel and a stylised mudguard helped keep the sidecar and passenger clean. This example, being offered at no reserve, has been in storage for a number of years and is in need of complete restoration but would make a great addition to a 1950s/1960s classic once finished.
