Lot details Registration No: FJ 9500 Chassis No: 35685 Mot Expiry: June 2007
With its development overseen by revered design chief Laurence Pomeroy, the Daimler Light 15 was introduced in October 1932. A refined yet frugal motorcar, its ladder-framed chassis featured all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension and four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by an 1805cc OHV straight-six engine allied to four-speed pre-selector transmission (the latter incorporating Daimler's famously advanced fluid flywheel), the model was reputedly capable of 64mph and over 20mpg. Built to a standard that befitted the holders of a Royal Warrant, some 1,100 were reputedly dispatched by the Works during 1933 (though, today survivors are somewhat scarce).
Finished in green over black with brown leather upholstery, this particular example is variously rated by the vendor as being in "sound" (chassis, bodywork), "all operating" (electrical equipment), "good" (paintwork, wheels / tyres, interior trim), "first class" (engine) or "excellent" (pre-selector transmission) condition. Reported to have been "originally used by Dr. Hawker in Devon", 'FJ 5900' is believed to have subsequently passed through the hands of three further keepers "none of whom used the car" before entering the current ownership in 1977. Returned to the road in 1981 following a "complete renovation", the past twenty-five years have seen the Daimler "cover approximately 19,000 miles". Apparently "performing faultlessly" during several Continental tours and rallies through Holland, Belgium and Germany, it is also said to have acted as the bridal car at scores of weddings (the last one being on August 4th 2006). Stated to have won "several trophies in concours competitions" and to have been twice judged "the most original car" at a show, 'FJ 5900' pleasingly retains much of its factory-fitted interior trim. Accompanied by a professional engineer's report from June 18th 1981 that described it as "probably one of the best examples for its model and year in existence", this elegant Daimler is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until June 27th 2007 and historic class (free) road tax until June 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
