A significant step in terms of 'Big Healey' evolution and foundation block for one of the 1960s' most charismatic rally cars, the 3000 MKI was introduced in March 1959. Powered by an enlarged 2912cc version of BMC's C-Series straight-six engine that developed some 124bhp and 167lbft of torque, it could be had in two-seater (BN7) or 2+2 seater (BT7) configurations. Progressively improved, the 3000 metamorphosed through MKII and MKIIa guises before the arrival of the ultimate MKIII BJ8 in October 1963. Boasting a centre console, proper convertible hood, wood veneer dashboard, redesigned exhaust system and wind-up windows, the 2+2 seater BJ8 proved a comfortable and fast grand tourer. With engine output boosted to 148bhp and 165lbft of torque thanks to a new camshaft and better valve springs etc, its reputed 124mph top speed was accessed via a four-speed manual gearbox. Last of the line, the Phase Two variant benefited from redesigned rear suspension, strengthened splined hubs and larger diameter front disc brakes.
According to the accompanying BMIHT Certificate, this particular example was built on 7th-8th September 1965 and dispatched to Aberdeen Motors some ten days later. A home market car, its original specification included a heater, adjustable steering column, black hide upholstery and overdrive. The subject of an engine overhaul by North West Motor Sport during 1986 (re-bore, new pistons, timing chain etc), numerous photographs on file show that the Big Healey also benefited from a `chassis up' restoration prior to entering the current ownership in August 1994. Entrusted to Merlin Classic Cars of Stockport for attention to its brakes, steering and suspension during the late 1990s, more recent work has been carried out by KN Motor Repairs of Macclesfield including the fitment of a new stainless steel exhaust (2006, £772.30), replacement brake servo (2007, £495.85) and fresh front discs / callipers / pads (2009, £471.05). Riding on wire wheels, this tempting MKIII BJ8 is offered for sale with V5/V5C Registration Documents, assorted MOTs (dating back to 1987), sundry invoices, restoration photographs and current MOT certificate valid until June 2010.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
