Famously launched at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, the Jaguar E-Type was faster, better looking and cheaper than anyone had dared hope. While, early racing success at the hands of Graham Hill and Roy Salvadori amongst others only enhanced its reputation. Based around a monocoque chassis equipped with all-round independent suspension (torsion-bar front / coil-sprung rear), rack-and-pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes, the model drove rings around its rivals. Fed by triple SU HD8 carburettors and topped with a 'straight port' DOHC cylinder head, the E-type's indomitable 3781cc straight-six engine was quoted as developing some 265bhp and 260lbft of torque. Allied to a four-speed Moss gearbox (with synchromesh on 2nd, 3rd and 4th), it reputedly enabled the sportscar to sprint from 0-60mph in 6.9 seconds and onto 150mph. Seemingly borrowed from a light aircraft, the wonderful turned aluminium centre console that adorned its dashboard was complemented by scalloped 'Dunlopillo' seats and a wood-rim steering wheel. Achingly beautiful yet viciously quick, the E-type remains for many the ultimate production Jaguar.
Finished in red with black leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "very good overall" condition. Reportedly showing "three former keepers on its V5C Registration Document", '807 NPA' is further understood to be "a UK car with matching chassis and engine numbers". Boasting Coopercraft brakes, the E-type was apparently treated to an engine overhaul by Mike & Graham Reeder of North Newnton, Wiltshire some 3,000 miles ago (while, the same firm are also said to have been responsible for fitting its Borg Warner T5 five-speed manual gearbox). Summed up by the seller as "an excellent driving early car with good gearbox and brakes", its current MOT certificate remains valid until December 2008.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
