Launched in 1946, the new Lea-Francis 14hp saloon owed much to its pre-WW2 namesake. Nigh on identical in terms of wheelbase, track and overall length, its handsome bodywork was fabricated by fellow Coventry firm AP Aircraft (APA). Commendably light despite a steel floorpan, the model's stressed-aluminium panels were formed over an integral wooden frame. Featuring twin high-mounted camshafts, its 1767cc four-cylinder engine was the work of ex-Riley engineer Harry Rose. Quoted as developing up to 70bhp in its later guises (an output that reputedly translated into a top speed of 75mph), this advanced unit was mated to a four-speed synchromesh manual gearbox. In production for a scant seven years, the 14hp was upgraded in late 1949 with torsion bar independent front suspension and a hydro-mechanic braking system. Restyled less than two years later, the combination of a two-inch lower roof line and recessed headlamps leant the final versions a more rakish air.
Finished in blue over black with black upholstery (piped in blue), this particular example is variously rated by the vendor as being in 'all good' (engine, gearbox, electrical equipment), 'as new' (paintwork, interior trim) or 'excellent' (chassis, bodywork) condition. Said to have "been rebuilt to a high standard", this "very rare 1952 Lea Francis four-light saloon" was apparently with its "last owner for twelve years". Thought to have been first registered by Cheshire County Council, it is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until August 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
