To own a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was the pinnacle of automotive achievement in the late 1960s. The car was outstanding, in comfort, in accommodation, in performance, in smoothness and sophistication. While most cars were still on single-circuit brakes, the Shadow boasted two completely independent high pressure circuits AND a low pressure back-up circuit too, with warning lights on the dashboard to confirm that all circuits were in perfect working order. Every detail on the car was engineered - over-engineered - to perfection. No wonder a Shadow cost more than a Ferrari Daytona. The Shadow I has the classic chrome bumpers that set off the grille and flying lady so well. This example benefits from the changes made to improve the car in its first few years, especially the GM400 automatic gearbox and Saginaw power steering - and the deletion of the troublesome front height control.
We can be sure that the lady who took delivery of this Shadow in London in 1970 - painted Garnet, an arresting shade of red, with beige hide interior - was a true sophisticate. Some time later, the car was professionally stripped and resprayed white, prior to a more relaxed semi-retirement of occasional duty as a wedding car. Enthusiasts may scoff, but a poll of British brides shows an overwhelming majority dream of going to their wedding in a white Rolls-Royce: this is the perfect candidate. The Shadow has just received a substantial overhaul of the complex braking and self-levelling suspension in order to bring the car back to perfect working order. It is hoped but not guaranteed that a new MOT certificate will have been obtained by the time of sale.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
