1962 marked the introduction of the first example of what was to become arguably the best known of all Bultaco's road bikes outside of Spain, the Metralla. Hints that a new sporting larger capacity machine was in development started to emerge from the factory during 1961. Ken Martin the then distributor for Bultaco in the UK had requested a 175cc motor for use by Dan Shorey, but was surprised to be supplied with an engine displaying 196cc derived from the K200 kart engine. Using the experience gained with the 200cc kart power unit the company had developed a four speed power unit developing 18 bhp at 6,500 rpm. The new engine was housed in a frame developed from the Tralla 101 unit using experience gained with the TSS racing models. The result was an instant success. The new model proved to be capable of 130 km/h with excellent handling and good brakes, the front, full width item featuring an air scoop being complimented by a conical rear. Typed the Metralla 62 the new model would continue until 1966 when the totally revised Mk 2 was introduced. The new model displaced 250cc and featured a five speed gearbox. The frame was completely revised although visually similar to it's predecessor and a twin leading shoe front brake was employed. The Metralla continued in this form until 1974 and held the distinction of being the fastest factory two stroke road bike in the world (according to Bultaco).
This example of the Metralla 62 has been restored to a high standard and is well presented in silver, grey and black.
