Postwar, Bentley cars moved closer to Rolls-Royce in design, styling, engineering and choice of components. For launched in 1946, the Bentley MkVI saloon shared its 4257cc engine with Rolls-Royce owner's Silver Wraith, the six-cylinder motor similar in design to a pre-war power unit, though with inlet-over-exhaust valve layout, though the Bentley was equipped with higher lift camshaft and twin carburettors.
Unlike the Wraith, which could still be supplied in rolling chassis form to coachbuilders, 80 per cent of all MkVIs were supplied with standard four-door saloon bodywork in steel made by Pressed Steel of Oxford and finished by R-R in the Crewe works. The same body and engine were employed by Rolls for their Silver Dawn from 1949, whilst from mid-1951, the engine's capacity was enlarged to 4566cc.
The MkVI being offered here was made in 1949, though the standard steel saloon has been the subject of what was said by the vendor to have been a body-off rebuild within the last seven years. We are also told that the right-hand drive car drives well with separate chassis said to be in very good condition, four-door bodywork good, paintwork in two-tone grey fair, red leather interior good and steel wheels and tyres also good. Both 4¼-litre six and four-speed manual gearbox are reportedly in good order as are the electrical items.
An MOT has only recently been passed with current certificate valid until next May, whilst the historic vehicle eligible and therefore tax exempt disc will not require renewal until April 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
