Founded in 1922 by Abel Bardin and Charles Benoit, Motobecane launched its first production model some two years later. A somewhat conservative design powered by a 175cc two-stroke engine, it featured a rocking front fork and belt drive. Available with a choice of 'ladies' or 'gentlemen' loop frames, its strong sales (150,000 units by 1929) helped establish Motobecane as France's biggest motorcycle manufacturer. Fielding a fine range of singles during the 1930s including a velomoteur, the company also found time to experiment with four-valve cylinder heads and unit construction.
Finished in black, this particular velomoteur is described by the vendor as being in "original, unrestored" condition. Equipped with a small capacity single (that is said to turn over freely) and chain drive, it has not run in some time. A potentially rewarding project, it combines charm and rarity in equal measure.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
