Lot details Registration No: T.B.A. Chassis No: 20039 Mot Expiry: June 2010
Based on a design exercise by the Swedish-born Pelle Petterson whilst working at Frua, the Volvo P1800 sports car was officially unveiled at the January 1960 Brussels Salon. Not entering production for a year, the newcomer's sleek two-door monocoque bodyshell was equipped with independent front suspension, a coil-sprung 'live' rear axle and disc / drum brakes. Powered by a 1782cc OHV four-cylinder engine (complete with five-bearing crankshaft and twin SU carburettors) allied to a four-speed manual gearbox, the 2+2 seater was capable of over 100mph. Initially manufactured in the UK, P1800 assembly was transferred to Sweden in April 1963 due to increasing concerns over fluctuating build quality. Never a major contender in the racing world, a P1800 did, however, finish second in class at the 1967 Daytona 24-hour race. Although, for many the Volvo is best remembered as Roger Moore's steed in cult TV series 'The Saint' which ran from 1962 until 1969.
Finished in blue with original upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. Said to have had "just one owner between 1966 and 2009 (now sadly deceased)" and to have covered "less than 22,000 miles from new", the seller considers that the Volvo "must be one of the best, original and unmolested P1800 cars left in existence". Reportedly "always garaged and cherished by the lady owner", the handsome sports car is further understood to retain its factory applied paintwork. The subject of a cherished number plate transfer at the moment, it is hoped but not guaranteed that the DVLA will have issued a new V5C Registration Document by the time of sale.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
