Lot details

Chassis No: 6/4/2728
Mot Expiry: Sept 2007

Founded by Benjamin and William Jowett, the Jowett Motor Manufacturing Company designed its first car during 1906 (though, the model in question did not enter production for another four years). Surviving the trials and tribulations of World War One, the Yorkshire-based concern introduced its 'Seven' range in 1920. Based around a lightweight ladder-frame chassis equipped with all-round semi-elliptic suspension, the newcomer soon garnered a reputation for reliability, durability and frugality. Powered by an 831cc (later 907cc) version of Jowett's famously torquey water-cooled 'flat-twin' sidevalve engine, the initial 'Short Two' model was joined by an extended 102-inch wheelbase 'Long Four' (four-seater) derivative in 1923. Progressively upgraded with coil ignition, electric starting and four-wheel drum brakes, the 'Seven' even boasted detachable cylinder heads by 1929. Mainstay of the Jowett range into the mid 1930s, it spawned the Kestrel Sports Saloon (1934) and Weasel Sports Tourer (1935) both of which benefited from an improved four-speed manual gearbox.
Finished in verdigris with green leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "OK" (907cc engine, electrical equipment, interior trim), "reconditioned" (four-speed manual gearbox) or "good" (chassis, bodywork, wheels / tyres) condition. Though, he considers it to "need a coat of sensible coloured paint". Said to come with "full history" and to have had just "eight owners since 1935", the Kestrel pleasingly retains its original / transferable 'DPC 989' registration number. Believed but not warranted to have covered 59,738 miles from new, this rare Jowett is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until July.
