The engineering behind the first SL, an abbreviation of Sport Leicht, was mainly the responsibility of celebrated Daimler-Benz boffin, Rudi Uhlenhaut and was developed from one of the world's most enigmatic cars, the Gullwing Merc of 1957. Discerning long-distance motorists from all over the world soon wanted an SL of their own and Daimler-Benz have been obliging them ever since. Each subsequent reincarnation has become a classic in its own right.
By the 1980s, the SL was offered with different engines, the 2962cc 6-cylinder 300SL, the 4196cc V8-powered 420SL and the 4973cc 500SL, although, as ever, with relatively few changes to their appearance and, by now, very far removed from being a sports car and much more of a very grand tourer.
The owner tells us that this righthand drive SL, which first left the Stuttgart works in 1986, has both hood and hardtop. It has been driven little since acquisition as a one owner car at one of our auctions in 2000. The 76,130 miles displayed on the odometer when entered for this sale is believed by the vendor to be the genuine total mileage from new which is confirmed by the M-B dealer service history on file.
The current condition of open bodywork, white paintwork, blue hood and interior is described as excellent with 3-litre six and 4-speed automatic transmission reportedly in good order. The current MOT will not need renewing until the end of next February.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
