Today's marketing hype often cites new models as having instant classic status. Yet no car designer has surpassed the jaw-dropping impact of Jaguar's E-type at launch. Devastating performance competed with the best Europe could offer, and William Lyons' parsimonious methods ensured that the car was produced at a significantly lower price than competitors from Aston and Maserati. A stiff monocoque allowed the new independent rear suspension to give supple ride quality while providing excellent handling. Yet that rear suspension was the only real departure mechanically from Jaguar's tried and tested formula which had such success at Le Mans, as the XK DOHC straight-six was already thirteen years old, and the Moss gearbox an almost anachronistic survivor from the 1930s. These iconic cars need no introduction to the classic market and early examples of both the Roadster (or OTS - Open Top Sports) and Coupe models are highly sought after among collectors and enthusiasts alike.
This home market 1962 coupe features the mods created to give extra foot room with deeper front footwells, yet still runs the pure specification the cars are noted for in early production. The car was re-registered as `KVS 524' by the E-type Centre prior to entering the current ownership in 1992. Paperwork on file reportedly shows six former keepers and includes a continuation logbook (stamped 1971), V5C Registration Document, assorted old MOTs (dating back to 1975) and numerous general maintenance receipts. Finished in Old English White with red leather upholstery, the two-seater is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. For the past seventeen years the car has apparently been garaged and only ever driven in the dry, the MOT runs until July 2010, with Historic VED disc valid until June 2010. Any E-type can lay claim to being a seminal design classic but an early Coupe has a degree of cool about it that looks fantastic whether out with the Jaguar Drivers or Enthusiasts Clubs, on a tour in the Alps or residing on the Riviera - pure class.
