Perhaps the most important piece of motor racing memorabilia to come to the market in recent years, this truncated aluminium nosecone piece was removed from the Mercedes-Benz W125/3 'Silver Arrow'; a car made famous by the likes of Carraciola & Von Brauchitsch & noted as the most successful of all of the W125 Grand Prix cars. In 1937 the car came second at the GP of Monaco, 2nd again at the German GP & 2nd at the British GP with Caracciola behind the wheel. In 1938, W125/3 was converted into a hill climb car, with modifications including smaller lighter brakes, a small radiator moved into the tail section which was packed with dry ice, plus a small fuel tank, no reverse gear & the fitting of a more powerful 600 bhp engine. The circular air vents on the nose cone were also covered & still remain so to this day. The car won many hillclimb events during the 1937 season with no other than Manfred Von Brauchitsch sat behind the wheel.
W125/3 was discovered in East Germany by the vendor in 1968 & the nosecone was kept as a memento after the car was sold. Approximately 110cm wide x 70cm high, with some wear, commensurate with age.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
