Founded in 1922, CZ (Cesk-Zbrojovka) began life as an arms manufacturer. Based at Strakonice in Bohemia, they did not diversify into motorcycles until 1932. Nationalised post WW2 by the Czech government they were merged with Jawa to form the CZ-Jawa combine. Although, more successful in off-road competition (CZs were runners-up in both the 1947 and 1949 ISDT events), the factory also indulged in road-racing. Based on Jaroslav Walter's highly successful mid 1930s Excelsior Manxman design, the Works CZ 250cc bikes featured a sophisticated frame with swinging-arm rear suspension. Upgraded to 350cc OHC power in 1953, one such CZ single-cylinder racer ridden by Leonhard Fassl won its class in that year's Austrian Championship.
Finished in black with a silver tank and yellow race roundels, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in good overall condition. Said to be an "ex-Works bike" that once belonged to "Mr Eleser", it was reportedly purchased from Germany where it was "well known". A very rare machine, it is offered for sale with a German 'Fahrzeugpass' historical identity document.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
