Matchless was founded in 1899 by the Collier family in Plumstead, South London. Brothers Charlie and Harry Collier were leading pioneer bike racers; Charlie riding a Matchless to victory in the single-cylinder event at the first ever Isle of Man TT meeting in 1907 and Harry winning two years later.
Having taken over rivals AJS in 1931, Matchless were to become a key part of Associated Motor Cycles who became one of the major names in the once world beating British motorcycle industry until the eventual demise of AMC in 1969.
One of the Matchless marque’s most enduring models was the G3L, a 1941-introduced 350 mainly for use by the armed forces. Featuring Teledraulics, this was the first British machine to have hydraulically damped forks rather than girder-spring forks.
Offered here is a 1960-built Matchless G3 in green that was employed by the Home Office for Civil Service work. According to the vendor, the 350cc bike has seen little use over the years, though the single-cylinder engine reportedly runs well and the machine could be ridden just as it is rather than necessarily having to carry out any cosmetic tidying up first.
PLEASE NOTE: This bike does not have a V5.
