Introduced in 1968, Mercedes' "New Generation" W114/115 models (otherwise known as the /8 series) were intended to attract new buyers to the marque and hence broaden its customer base. Typically well engineered, they featured all round, independent coil-sprung suspension and four-wheel disc brakes together with revised manual and four speed automatic transmissions. Mainstay of the W115 range, the 220 was powered by a 2197cc SOHC four-cylinder engine that developed some 105bhp and 132lbft of torque. Reputedly capable of over 100mph, the Stuttgart factory's legendary build quality helped make it a strong sales success. Finished in Havana Brown with tan leather upholstery, this particular automatic example is described by the vendor as being in variously very good (engine, electrical equipment and paintwork), excellent (chassis) or as new (wheels / tyres) condition. Though, he notes that bodywork has some "minor blemishes". Said to be "a lovely car that has sailed through its last three MOTs", it apparently "won first and second in show during a car rally at York approximately five years ago". Believed to have covered just 80,000 miles from new, it has recently benefited from a new battery and exhaust. Offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until January 2006, its history file reportedly includes the "sale invoice" and "twenty old MOTs".
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
