Introduced to the UK in November 1958, Volvo's highly successful 120-series 'Amazon' was built around a steel-fabricated monocoque. Equipped with independent coil and wishbone front suspension and a Panhard rod located rear axle, it quickly acquired a reputation for toughness, longevity and reliability. Powered by a choice of torquey four-cylinder engines, the 'Amazon' proved a formidable competitor on both rally stages and racetracks alike. In 1963, Volvo 122S cars won the European Rally Championship, came second in the European Touring Car Championship and took first in class at the 6-hour and 12-hour Nurburgring endurance races (an 'Amazon' would also go on to win the 1965 RAC European Touring Car Championship). Available from August 1968 onwards, the 1986cc B20 powerplant in both single-carburettor 'A' (90bhp) and twin-carburettor 'B' (118bhp) specifications brought a welcome boost in performance especially if combined with the lighter, two-door bodyshell.
Finished in white with red upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its 1986cc engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Sold back to the supplying dealer by its first owner, 'HNU 187H' has formed part of the Volvo main agent's collection ever since. Said to have covered just 19,884 miles from new, this timewarp 121 saloon is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until July 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
