Introduced in 1931, the Austin Light 12/4 range sported a distinctive chrome radiator shell, generously louvered bonnet and rounded wings. Underpinned by a sturdy ladder-frame chassis equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension and four-wheel drum brakes, it was available in a variety of open and closed guises. Powered by a torquey 1535cc four-cylinder sidevalve engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox, most 12/4s were capable of circa 60mph. Famed for its reliability, dependability and economy, the model helped consolidate Austin's position during the 1930s as Britain's most successful motor car manufacturer. A handsome design, the two-door Drophead Coupe variant featured a fold-out windscreen, wind-up windows and lined hood.
Finished in grey / blue with blue leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "sound" (engine), "good" (coachwork, paintwork, gearbox) or "excellent" (electrical equipment, interior trim) condition. Riding on painted wire wheels, this charming Post-Vintage Austin is offered for sale with old style logbook and current MOT certificate.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
