Lot details Registration No: KBD940D Chassis No: GHM378178 Mot Expiry: April 2011
Introduced in 1962, the MG B Roadster enjoyed an 18-year production run. With nicely balanced handling and a good turn of speed, it merited the old MG marketing slogan 'Safety Fast'. Based around a monocoque chassis featuring independent coil-sprung front suspension and a leaf-sprung 'live' rear axle, its 1798cc B-series four-cylinder engine was allied to four-speed manual transmission. Capable of over 100mph (especially if specified with overdrive), the provision of disc/drum brakes and rack and pinion steering greatly aided control. Today, it enjoys a very strong following and with its GT sister has spawned a dedicated support industry making it among the most practical and cost effective of all classic cars.
From the sound of things we would be inclined to agree with the vendor when he states: "This remarkable, beautiful condition MG B Roadster is worthy of a close look". Many thousands of pounds have reportedly been spent on a 'ground-up restoration' which included many new panels not to mention a replacement engine and refurbished mechanicals. As well as fresh chrome wire wheels, tubes and tyres, there is a new interior in black leather with red piping, new carpets and a new double duck hood. The engine bay benefits from chrome pancake air filters and a chrome rocker cover, and the interior from a leather-rimmed steering wheel. The vendor informs us that this car "drives and handles superbly" and is "very quiet". Describing the two-seater as being in "excellent" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork, he adds: "This Roadster, arguably the most desirable of MG Bs with chrome bumpers and the five-bearing engine, will hopefully reward its new owner with many years of enjoyable classic car motoring and value for money at a fraction of the restoration cost".
