A joint venture between VW and Porsche intended to replace their Karmann Ghia and 912 lines respectively, the mid-engined 914 was launched at the 1969 Frankfurt Motor Show. Based on an earlier proposal by Gugelot Design, near Stuttgart, its distinctive two-door, targa-roofed bodywork was fabricated in Karmann's Osnabruck plant. Equipped with all round independent suspension (torsion bar front, trailing-arm rear), four-wheel disc brakes, a five-speed manual gearbox and rack and pinion steering, the new model could be had in either four-cylinder 1.7 litre Volkswagen (914/4) or six-cylinder 2 litre Porsche (914/6) guises. Though, confusingly while they were marketed as the VW-Porsche 914/4 and Porsche 914/6 in Europe, across the Atlantic both variants came under the Porsche umbrella. Renowned for their poise and handling rather than outright speed, it was four-cylinder car that would prove to be the greater sales success. With some 80bhp and 97lbft of torque on tap and a reputed kerb weight of just 898kg, the European-specification 914/4 was found capable of 110mph. In production for just six years, the vast majority were sold to America.
Finished in red with black vinyl / cloth upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in solid overall condition. Reportedly imported from California in 1998 prior to being UK registered some three years later, it is said to need re-commissioning following a period of inactivity (though, it apparently runs and drives under its own power).
