Lot details Registration No: SV 7300 Chassis No: 20965 Mot Expiry: April 2007
A landmark year for Austin, 1922 saw the introduction of the 7 and 12/4 model ranges. While the former proved to be Britain's first full size car in miniature, the latter soon gained an enviable reputation for quality and longevity. Built around a sturdy leaf sprung ladder frame chassis, the 12/4 was powered by a four-cylinder 1661cc sidevalve engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. Equipped with centrally mounted handbrake and gear change mechanisms, it was reputedly capable of 45mph and 23mpg. A singularly endearing (as well as enduring) design, the 12/4 remains among the best-loved of all Vintage Austins with a 1926 Clifton Tourer being the inspiration behind author Val Biro's 'Gumdrop' children's stories.
According to information supplied by the vendor, this particular example was "originally sold new to Australia (as many were) in rolling chassis form and bodied locally - most likely by Holden - but became a cut down pick-up at some point. Imported to UK as restoration project. Totally rebuilt from bare chassis as two-seat tourer with rear luggage compartment. Work done during 1990s. Not really used since completion. Engine re-bored, new pistons, valves, guides, oil pump, clutch etc, 12volt". Finished in blue with black vinyl upholstery, SV 7300 is variously described by the seller as being in "good" (gearbox, electrical equipment), excellent (interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork, wheels / tyres) or "rebuilt / A1" (engine) condition. Though, he notes that it lacks sidecsreens. Sporting a rear-mounted spare wheel, scuttle vents and a wooden dashboard, this charming 12/4 is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until April 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
