In setting up his Honda Technical Institute in a small wooden shed in Hamamatsu in October 1946, the great Soichiro Honda had actually founded what was to become the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer. The initial aim of Honda, who had built and raced cars in the 1930s, was to provide affordable transport for a Japanese home market on its uppers following WW2 defeat.
The first Hondas consisted of army-surplus engines attached to bicycles, although only a year later, Honda had designed and was constructing his own 50cc two-stroke motor. By 1949, and already with twenty employees on the payroll, Honda was producing his first complete bike - the 98cc two-stroke Model D or ‘Dream’. The more sophisticated Model J or ‘Benly’ with 90cc four-stroke single motor followed, while the 250cc CB72 and 305cc CB77 were the first to be hit models in export markets.
According to the vendor of the 1968-manufactured Honda PC50 in blue being auctioned here, everything on the 49cc single-cylinder powered two-wheeler appears to him to be working correctly and the V5 on file confirms the YAR 70F registration. 'This little love runs very well', he says, 'what a cracker!'
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
