The once great AJS was founded by Albert John Stevens in Wolverhampton and had really arrived internationally when an AJS won the 1914 Junior TT. The Midland company was first taken over by Matchless of London in 1931 and then the combined firm became part of Associated Motor Cycles in 1938. Post-WW2, with Les Graham riding the AJS Porcupine Twin, the marque won the first ever 500cc World Championship in 1949.
This M20 500 Twin road bike was made by AJS in 1952. The frame, painted in traditional for the early post-WW2 years black, the suspension components and the cycle parts as well as the brightwork are claimed by the entrant to be currently in good condition, with the 500cc two-cylinder motor, the gearbox and the electrical items also reportedly in good order.
All numbers are still matching, claims the vendor, who was hoping to have the historic vehicle tax disc eligible bike MOT tested before sale day. Potential buyers are therefore advised to check out the latest certificate's details by inspecting the documents file, which we are told also contains workshop manuals, during viewing at the Stoneleigh auction venue.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
