Italian Gilera was one of the motorcycling's big hitters in the 1950s, racing with huge success and constructing many fine road machines. Founded by a youthful Giuseppe Gilera in 1909, by the 1930s, the marque were representing their country in the International Six Days Trial.
Gilera's most famous roadsters were 4-stroke singles, most notably the 500cc Saturno that was deservedly much loved for its combination of clean, handsome styling and lively performance. Although designed and briefly raced just before WW2 diverted Italian manufacturing facilities into supplying the war effort, regular production Saturnos in Sport and Touring form, as well the Sanremo competition version, only really started to be produced from 1946.
The Saturno was powered by an aircooled 2-valve overhead valve pushrod single of 499cc capacity which, in Sport spec, was capable of producing 22bhp. Weighing in at 170kg (374lbs) dry, a Saturno should be good for 85mph flat out. Entered from a collection, this 1951-built Saturno 500 with frame in Gilera red has single-cylinder engine, frame and cycleparts reportedly in good condition.
