The ‘Landie’ as it was affectionally known was designed for light agricultural use and to create the cashflow required to kickstart Rover's post-war passenger car production. The irony of its longevity is that production was only intended to run for two-three years. Instead, it rapidly became the workhorse of the world. The model steadily progressed from a single offering with 1.6-litre petrol engine to a complete family of long and short wheelbase derivatives with an ever-increasing choice of engines. By the time of the Series IIA, production was at its all-time peak of over 60,000 vehicles per annum. In addition to record sales, the model dominated many world markets, accounting for around 90% of the 4x4 sector in Australia, Africa and the Middle East. The Series IIA is considered by many to be the most durable of all the Land Rover Series vehicles.
This Series IIA was manufactured in 1969 and first UK registered on the 15th of April that year. Finished in Dark Green paintwork with Black interior trim, the Land Rover was purchased by the vendor in 2004 having 12 former keepers and shows a recorded mileage of 57,900. Subject to a body-off restoration in 2016-17, with some photographs supplied of the works completed, the work included a rebuilt tub, new rear floor and supports, Autosparks wiring loom, and new braking system. Fitted with a 2.25 litre military high-compression engine at some stage in its life, the Series IIA has also had the upgrade of a Series III gearbox with overdrive.
Fitted with new clutch and brake cylinders, exhaust and new tyres in the last twelve months, the Land Rover has also benefited from steering remediation work in June 2020. Offered with tonneau cover for the rear pick-up body, V5C, a number of MOT’s dating from between 2004 and 2020 and a number of previous tax discs, along with chequer-plate for the rear and doors should the new owner wish to fit them.
