The Ascot saloon was launched in September 1932 costing £208, with hood conversion by Salmons Coachbuilders was approximately £36 at that time. Surviving examples of the converted Tickfords over standard saloons are now extremely rare, as are original examples of Salmons Tickford coachbuilt bodies.
This example first registered in October 1935 in Fife, has lived in Scotland for its entire life since, only covering two-families throughout its ownership. Initially used by the first lady owner and her chauffeur for charitable work during WW2 and local journeys, the Austin then was passed to the present owners’ father before being laid up. Passed to the vendor in 1971 with 57,00 miles, the car has been used minimally over the past 50 years covering only 1000 miles.
Presented today in conserved rather than restored condition, the car is thought to be highly original, retaining circa 75% of its original paintwork. Mechanically original, the 12/4 was subject to mechanical restoration works in the 1970’s including new kingpins, steering ball pins, universal joints on prop shaft, suspension bushes and Luvax shock absorbers. With an engine overhaul in 2007 including a new block, pistons, bearings, timing chain and sprockets, the Tickford was also subject to other mechanical fettling including new radiator core and relined brakes.
The outer exposed layer (double duck material) of the hood was replaced and fixed in place in the early 1950’s featuring a larger rear window than the Tickford style, however the original mechanism including chrome crack handle, internal headlinings and fittings are present. In addition, the Tickford slim profile chrome rear window frame is present with a new glazing panel and fixing screws, therefore all parts required to return the hood to operating functionality is present.
Offered with a substantial history file including V5C, original buff logbook, handbook, service schedule and spares book, the 12/4 is also supplied with the original tool set and tonneau cover for the hood in folded position.
