There were two types of bicycle available in 1891, the 'Ordinary' (or Penny Farthing as it is most commonly known) and the 'safety'. The 'safety' was similar to today's bicycles, but had hard, solid, rubber tyres. The frames were mainly metal, although on rare occasions Bamboo was used, and some examples were even metal simulating bamboo.
In 1888 a major revolution took place, when Dunlop patented the pneumatic tyre. Fitted to a safety bicycle, this faster, more comfortable tyre led to the growth of cycling as a means of transport and recreation. The same technique was further developed for automobile tyres.
Part of a private collection this example is fitted with 29" front and rear wheels, new solid tyring, radial spoked wheels, spoon brake, inch pinch chain, foot pegs to the front forks and is nickel plated.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
