The first production Porsche was the rear-engined 356 (named as such because of being job 356 in the Porsche studio portfolio at Gmund). The agelessly styled car was not only a great looker, but also extraordinarily light and aerodynamic compared to anything else around at the time. Rear-engined with gearbox in front of the rear axle line and motor behind, the early cars were powered by the air-cooled 1131cc Beetle flat-4, albeit tuned to produce 40bhp, the brakes being cable-operated until 1951. The 356 had a steel platform chassis, torsion bars, trailing links at the front and swing axles at the rear. In 1950, Porsche was able to move production back into post-war Germany. In 1951, a Porsche took the first of many class wins at Le Mans - the marque had arrived.
This 1965 manufactured 356SC was purchased in Texas by the current owner approximately 12 years ago, since when it has been driven 14,000 miles, the mileage displayed when entered. During his ownership the fixed head coupe has been repainted and some of the brightwork renewed. The current condition of body and chassis, grey paintwork, black interior, 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine and 4-speed manual transmission are all described as excellent. The MOT is current until next January and the coupe qualifies for a Road Fund exempt tax disc. Early Porsches, like this, are highly rated by PCGB members and have become extremely collectable on both sides of the Atlantic.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
