Austin's response to the Minor from their arch rival from Cowley, Morris, was the A30 which hit the motoring columns at the 1951 Earls Court Motor Show. This was the Birmingham manufacturer's first of many models to employ unitary-construction rather than have separate chassis and body. The A30 was also the first Austin and the first of many different models to be fitted with the soon to become world-famous BMC A Series 4-cylinder engine. Thanks to some canny production cost-cutting at the Longbridge works, such as having simpler external door handles, the A30 undercut the Minor's showroom price by £10!
