  • Recorded by the DVLA as a 1970 Spitfire
  • 1300cc inline 4-cylinder engine with twin SU carburettors
  • Described as driving well

The prototype Spitfire was produced by Standard-Triumph in 1957 but was delayed until 1962. It was based on a modified Herald chassis clothed in a swooping two-seater body penned by Giovanni Michelotti. Unlike the rival Austin-Healey Sprite, it featured wind-up windows; also a single-piece front end that folded forward to provide optimum access to the engine bay. It was the MkIV variant of 1970 that embodied the most comprehensive changes made during the model's 19-year lifespan. The front and rear of the car was restyled, with the petite rear red light lenses dispensed with in favour of light units resembling the rest of the Triumph range.

Recorded at the DVLA as a 1970 Spitfire, this example is understood to be a MkI (1962-1964) chassis that has been built utilising MkII (1965-1967) body components with the main body number that of a MkIII (1967-1970). Boot lid badging is from both a 'Mk2' and a 'Spitfire 4' (MkI). This car wears the MkII pre 1967 bumpers, arguably prettier and situated lower than later cars that fell in-line with crash regulations. We are told that there is a 'good' hood and frame, although from which model year of Spitfire we can’t confirm.

The engine is a 1300cc inline 4 cylinder with twin SU carburettors, which could be similar to the 1300cc fitted in MkIII cars in the period 1967-1974 and the Triumph Herald 13/60; we were unable to verify. From the outset the Spitfire was fitted with front disc brakes, which are retained by this example and it is described as driving well. Prospective purchasers would be most welcome to view the car to ascertain the specific specification of this Spitfire. The car is in the Surrey showroom, so any inspection would be easy to arrange.
