John Markey

Motorcar Specialist

After an early spell as a Metallurgist at the Fairey Aviation Company, John fulfilled his true desire to get into the automobile industry by joining a London and South East distributor handling Morris, Wolsey, Riley and MG cars. John started racing with more humble machines before getting his hands on a Mk XI Ford Cosworth in 1966. Having moved jobs to Fiat UK he then decided to try racing full time and competed in the World Sports Car Championship, with drives at Spa, Nurburgring, the Targa Florio and the 12 hours at Montjuich including drives in a Formula One ex-Rodriguez Cooper-Maserati.

John joined BMW, continued to race in his spare time the moved into managing the Dealer BMW team which competed successfully against the factory teams. John raced through the 1970’s in various cars from a 3 Litre Capri, Lagonda V12 and a ‘Low Drag’ E-Type. In the late 1980’s John joined up with Peter Colborne-Baber and they set up a restoration business covering all makes but with a particular leaning towards Jaguar building a number of C and D Type replicas to a very high standard. This culminated in them building the first affordable replica of the XJ13 which featured on the front cover of Classic and Sports Car and in The Sunday Times.

John and Peter set up the classic car business Beacon Hill Garage in 2000 and built an enviable reputation for the quality of their work, high levels of customer service and the depth of knowledge they were able to impart. After almost 25 years together, John and Peter decided to pursue different interests and John has joined H&H in the Private Sales department. He is able to offer clients not just a rich racing pedigree (as a member of the BRDC), but a lifetime of experience in restoring classic cars and buying and selling cars on behalf of a number of significant collectors. John is based at our Hindhead premises. For some reason John chose this early and thoughtful photograph of himself!
