Aston Martin DB4 Sold H&H Classic Car Auction

Whisky Baron's 1962 Aston Martin leads sale at £368,000

This stunning 1962 Aston Martin Seires IV was supplied new by Callanders Garages Ltd of Glasgow to Alexander Whyte Esq of the Whyte & Mackay whisky dynasty – one of just 185 such cars made. It sold this week as the leading lot with H&H Classic in Duxford for £360,000, the first of all the top estimate cars to find new buyers at the sale.

According to its accompanying copy build record, chassis DB4/822/R was supplied new via Callanders Garages Ltd of Glasgow to Andrew Whyte Esq. of Tudor House, Skelmorlie. A member of the Whyte & MacKay whisky dynasty and a petrolhead to boot who had previously owned WO and Derby Bentleys, Mr Whyte specified the Aston Martin in the handsome combination of Snow Shadow Grey with Red leather upholstery. Fitted with a replacement gearbox, overdrive and 3.77:1 rear axle under warranty when it was six months’ old, the DB4 is understood to have remained in Scotland until the mid-1970s.

There are some cars that just speak to your heart because of their beauty, history, lines, classiness, and aura of something special. Such is this 1957 Mercedes-Benz 190SL that has had a meticulous top to bottom restoration and it sold for £224,250.

It was one of just 562 such models built across all right-hand drive markets and one of just 3,332 190SLs made during 1957. Albeit the Mercedes-Benz was not UK road registered until April 1958.

Damian Jones of H&H Classics, comments: “It has been the subject of an exhaustive two and a half year, photographically documented, ‘rotisserie’ restoration and is as good underneath as it is on top and the nicest example we have encountered. It is potentially Mille Miglia eligible.”

Bentley Design that captured Le Mans victories - 1925 Bentley 3 Litre Dual Cowl Tourer with original coachwork by J. Gurney sells for £216,200.

Classic Bentley sold H&H Classic Car Auctions

One of just twenty-four Bentley 3 Litre cars known to have survived with its original J. Gurney Nutting coachwork, ‘CR 9914’ also boasts matching chassis, engine, bonnet, steering box, rear axle and gearbox numbers.

Remarkably original with pot joints at both ends of the propshaft plus Gurney Nutting floorboards / fasteners and door furniture, the car has been much improved during the current ownership by Ewen Getley's Kingsbury Racing Shop including an engine overhaul (£14,797.20), new clutch, replacement exhaust, relined brakes and sundry electrical work.

This car had been in its current family ownership since 1975 and had done just  50,000 miles from new. It sold for £286,875.

A rare UK-supplied (one of just 488), Series M example complete with five-bolt Cromodora alloy wheels and 'Dino' badging. A stunning looking Dino it came to market for the first time in forty-six years!

High Flying low mileage 1998 Ferrari 550 Maranello (Manual) sells for £86,250

This magnificent 550 Maranello manual is an original UK right-hand drive example, finished in Nero Daytona metallic, Nero upholstery with Bordeaux inserts to the classic Daytona seats.

It has done only 23,150 miles and is accompanied by an extensive history file and original handbook pack. It was sold by Maranello Egham in March 1998 as one of just 457 UK-supplied RHD examples. Finished in rare Nero Daytona Metallic with Nero interior featuring Daytona seats with Bordeaux inserts, it has been freshly serviced by Graypaul Ferrari prior to the sale. It includes a factory option quilted rear parcel shelf & Daytona seats.

Actress Jennifer Saunders' 'Absolutely Fabulous' 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera 2S made £22,000

Owned by the celebrated actress, comedian and screenwriter Jennifer Saunders since it was just under a year old, this tempting 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera 2S sold for £20,000.

A rear-wheel drive, six-speed manual, Coupe version of the increasingly sought after 997-series it has been treated to a major service in July 2021 at a cost of £2,710.19.

Although, the multi award-winning actress, comedian and screenwriter Jennifer Saunders is perhaps best known for Absolutely Fabulous and French & Saunders, her current, fifteen-year long ownership of ‘LS55 MYK’ suggests that she is a petrolhead too! Certainly, few enthusiasts would argue with her choice of a rear-wheel drive, manual transmission 911 Coupe.

This rare early 1977 Lynx Jaguar D-Type – was the fourth chassis number allocated and the third one built – at ‘No Reserve’, it was an attractive opportunity considering one was bid to $280,000 recently in the US. It sold on the day with H&H for £213,750


The fourth chassis number allocated and the third Lynx D-Type to be completed, it was supplied new to Blair Hamilton, a personal friend of company founder Guy Black.

It was initially built to long nose, high tail 1955 specification and subsequently updated by Lynx to Works 1956 trim, complete with a wraparound windscreen and two doors. Its aluminium body was crafted by Williams and Pritchard and it raced in Canada, Europe, and the UK but it has since been converted to fast road specification.

Pop Larkin’s (David Jason) beloved Rolls-Royce 20hp Park Ward Laundalette that starred in ITV’s ‘The Darling Buds of May’ made £63,000 at the H&H sale in Duxford.

Arguably one of the most beloved UK film car characters ever, this 1926 vehicle of dreams for Mom and Pop Larkin was purchased by its current keeper in 2019 for £100,000, and its previous keeper beforehand for the same sum. It was offered for sale with an MOT certificate valid until 5th May 2022.

The Darling Buds of May was a television series produced for the ITV network by Yorkshire TV and first broadcast between 1991 and 1993. The first six episodes of Series 1 and the first two of Series 2 are adaptations of the 1958 novel of the same name by renowned author H.E. Bates. The remaining episodes are original storylines based on the same format.
