"There can be few less-ostentatious fast motorcars than the BMW 633 CSi coupe. It tends to attract appreciative looks only from the knowledgeable . . . But the real reason why I describe this 633 CSi BMW as coming near to perfection is the combination it gives of very great performance, comfort, docility, and fine engineering" (Motor Sport, August 1977).
Successor to the race proven (E9) 3.0CS/CSi high performance sports coupes, the 6-series was introduced in March 1976. More forgiving than its predecessors, it utilised a modified version of the (E12) 5-series saloon platform equipped with all-round independent suspension (coil and wishbone front, trailing-arm rear) and powerful disc brakes. A natural rival to the 928 and XJS, the four-seater 6-series proved more capacious than the Porsche and sportier than the Jaguar. Immediately recognisable thanks to its distinctive 'shark nose' frontal styling and thin pillared glasshouse it boasts real road presence. An impression backed up by the various versions of BMW's mighty M30, SOHC straight-six engine fitted throughout the range. Launch flagship, the 633 CSi was powered by a 3210cc SOHC unit that developed some 200bhp and 210lbft of torque. Available with a no-cost choice of either four-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, the model was reputedly capable of 130mph. Introduced to the UK in August 1976, just 1,345 RHD 633CSi Autos are thought to have been made.
Finished in Metallic Blue with blue leather / cloth upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "fair / good" (interior trim), "goodish" (paintwork) or "good" (engine, four-speed automatic transmission, electrical equipment, chassis, bodywork, wheels / tyres) condition. Thought to be only the fifty-first RHD 633CSi built (or so its chassis number would imply), 'VFE 934R' has apparently covered just 61,349 miles from new. Riding on alloy wheels, the coupe is said to have been regularly maintained but sparingly used during the current fourteen year ownership. A stylish yet practical motorcar, this rare BMW is offered for sale with "all past MOTs" and a current MOT certificate valid until October 12th 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
