When BMC replaced the MGA with the MGB in 1962, the most fundamental differences were the employment of a unitary-construction bodyshell rather than separate chassis and body, and a larger four-cylinder engine of 1798cc capacity instead of the 1622cc four that powered the final run of MGAs.
This B left first the famous, but now long closed MG Abingdon works in 1964 as a LHD roadster. However, the steering was professionally converted to the present RHD during what is claimed to have been a complete rebuild, there being a full photo record of this work in the vehicle's history file. The restoration project was painstakingly executed, says the current owner, with the retention of as much originality as possible and much great attention to detail being taken.
It is claimed that both 1.8-litre four and four-speed manual gearbox were completely rebuilt. Trim and carpets, hood and tonneau were replaced where necessary, the seats trimmed in black leather with red piping. Thanks to telescopic gas dampers being fitted, the open sports drives beautifully and, says the vendor, has proved to be totally reliable.
Current condition of bodyshell is described as good with red painted body panels immaculate, interior unmarked and wire wheels good. Both motor and manual box with overdrive are reportedly in excellent order and electrical equipment all good. Whilst only 1104 miles were displayed when entered, presumably since restoration, it is believed that the actual mileage is likely to have been around 65,000 since new. Current MOT and tax disc will be valid until May.
