Norton debuted a new, over head cam single cylinder engine designed by Walter Moore during the 1927 season. Conceived in response to rumours of similar designs being developed by rival manufactures , the new power unit retained the 79 x 100mm dimensions synomous with the Norton marque. The over head cam was driven by a shaft witth bevel gears mounted on the right hand side of the engine. The bottom end of the engine was similar to those employed by its over head valve cousins except for the drive arrangements for the camshaft drives. The top end featured a distinctive cambox with an inspection cover that allowed access to the top bevels. The new engine was installed in a new cradle frame that became a bench mark for handling in the rigid era. The new machines showed considerable promise at the 1927 TT, although both Woods and Bennetts failed to finish, both suffering from clutch failiure. However, following revisions to the clutch assembly Woods secured a number of good results in Europe, prompting the introduction of production version of the new machine for the 1928 season. Typed the CS1, the new over head cam model shared its frame and cycle parts with the equaly new overhead valve ES2. The CS! was joined by a 350cc version, the CSJ, during 1928 with both machines continuing in largely unaltered form into the thirtties. However, Moore had moved to NSU and been replaced by Arthur Carroll who, disapointed with the results acheived by the works with the Moore engine undertook a complete redesign, the resultant design quickly prooving itself on the track and gradually replacing the Moore engine in the road going machines. By the Mid thirties the CS1 had evolved into a potent sports tourer complimenting the sporting International in the range.
The attractive example offered dates from 1936 and was imported into Germany from Australia. Restored to a good standard throughout it has been featured in "Oldtimer Mart" magazine.
