Lot details Registration No: PPP785D Chassis No: B9472996 Mot Expiry: Apr 2004
The Sunbeam Tiger evolved from the Kenneth Howes styled, unitary construction Alpine, which was launched by the Rootes family owned car firm in 1959 - initially, with 1494cc Rapier engine and transmission; latterly, with 1725cc capacity.
The vendor tells us that the Sunbeam Tiger offered here is well known to the Tiger Club. Put together at the Jensen West Brom works in 1966, the righthand drive car had had four previous keepers and is claimed never to have been welded. With the benefit of both soft and hardtops, and original PPP 785D registration intact, this Minilite alloy shod Midland sportscar with the US Ford motors would make an ideal historic competition car for rallies or races.
The 8-cylinder engine was totally rebuilt by Westlake Performance Car Service of High Wycombe in 1987. Most parts were replaced with uprated components including high lift cam, high compression pistons and high output oil pump. The crank was reground, the block bored out to just under 5-litres (302 cu ins), the compression increased to 9.5 to 1 and the power output raised to 300bhp.
The bodywork is said to be in good condition as are the Midnight Blue paintwork and blue interior. Both engine and 4-speed manual transmission are reportedly in good order. The 90,000 miles displayed when entered for this auction is believed to be the genuine total mileage for the car from new, while the MOT on file is current until April.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
